Rob John
Associate, University of St Andrews, Centre for the Study of Philanthropy & Public Good

Rob is an independent consultant and researcher with interests in venture philanthropy and social entrepreneurship, particularly in Asia. He is an Associate of the Centre for the Study of Philanthropy & Public Good at the University of St. Andrews, Scotland.

Rob originally trained as a synthetic organic chemist, receiving his doctorate from Oxford University, followed by research posts at universities in the US, Switzerland and Ethiopia Following a career spanning 15 years in aid and development, he directed an Oxford-based venture philanthropy fund.

In 2005 Rob was elected the first Visiting Fellow at the new Skoll Centre for Social Entrepreneurship, Said Business School at Oxford University, while also managing the launch and development of the European Venture Philanthropy Association (EVPA) and the European Venture Philanthropy Fund. In 2010 he co-founded the Singapore-based Asian Venture Philanthropy Network (AVPN), to strengthen a community of venture philanthropy funds serving Asia’s social entrepreneurs.

From 2011 - 17, Rob was appointed a Visiting Senior Fellow at NUS Business School, Singapore, where his research interests included innovation in philanthropy, giving circles, angel impact investment and new models of corporate giving. He is a global advisor to Social Ventures Hong Kong, an advisory board member of The Conference Board, and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, Commerce & Manufacturing.

Rob lives in Cambridgeshire, England.
